How a Regent's Canal Boat Trip Works
Meet the boat in Camden, take your seat under the canopy, and watch the lock from the water.
Meet at Camden
The Jenny Wren leaves from Walkers Quay in Camden, a short walk from Camden Town station and Camden Market. Boarding means a few steps down into the boat.
Go Through the Lock
The trip starts with Hampstead Road Lock, the twin lock beside Camden Market. The crew opens the gates by hand and the boat rises or falls with the water.
Slide Past the Zoo
West of Camden the canal runs along the north edge of Regent's Park and past London Zoo, between tree-lined banks and the back gardens of grand houses.
Turn at Little Venice
Through a short canal tunnel the boat reaches Little Venice, where narrowboats moor in rows along the water, then turns and brings you back to Camden. Allow 90 minutes for the round trip.

The Guide
Which Regent's Canal Boat Trip to Take
A trip boat with a guide, a boat you steer yourself, or a kayak. The prettiest stretch is the same; how you travel it is not.
A Regent’s Canal boat trip is London’s slowest and greenest boat ride: a narrowboat or trip boat on the canal between Camden and Little Venice, past London Zoo and the edge of Regent’s Park, at little more than walking pace. The one this page puts first is the Canal Boat Ride on Camden Lock, 90 minutes on the canopied Jenny Wren with a crew who work the Hampstead Road Lock by hand while you watch. It is from US$31 a person (checked October 2026), rated 4.6 out of 5 from 1,338 reviews.

Recent guests call the lock “very cool” and single out a skipper who added music history to the canal’s. One wrote that her husband “found interesting shots”: the canal is lined with houseboats, bridges and back gardens you see from nowhere else in London.
The canal in two minutes
The Regent’s Canal opened in 1820 to carry goods from the Grand Union Canal at Paddington round the north of central London to the Thames at Limehouse, 8.6 miles (13.8 km) and twelve locks away. The cargo has gone. What is left is a ribbon of water through Camden, past the zoo, under the road bridges and through a 250-metre tunnel at Maida Hill, with houseboats moored along much of it.
The stretch the trip boats use, between Camden and Little Venice, is the prettiest. Little Venice is where the canal meets the Paddington Arm of the Grand Union, a pool ringed by moored narrowboats, cafés and white stucco houses. Camden, at the other end, is the lock, the market and the noise.
Which canal trip to take
| Trip | From | Length | Starts at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canal Boat Ride on Camden Lock | US$31 | 90 minutes | Camden |
| GoBoat Rental on the Regent's Canal | US$127 per boat | 1 to 3 hours | Paddington Basin |
| Regent's Canal Punting Boat Ride with Live Music | US$27 | 50 minutes | Camden |
| Regent's Canal Guided Kayaking Tour | US$20 | 1.5 hours | City Road Basin, Islington |
Per person unless marked, as listed on GetYourGuide in October 2026.
The GoBoat is the one to look at for a group. Each electric boat seats up to eight, you drive it yourself after a safety and driving lesson at the dock, and the price is per boat, so eight friends pay about US$16 each. The boats go at up to 4 mph, almost silently, and you can bring a picnic. The kayak tour goes from Islington with a qualified coach and is for adults only. The punting boat is shorter and adds live music.
The London Waterbus Company also sails between Little Venice and Camden on its own: about 45 minutes one way, £17 for an adult and £14 for a child aged 4 to 16 on its website in October 2026, with under-4s free. It is a good bus with a view; the Jenny Wren trip is longer, goes through the lock and has a crew talking you along the way.
When to go
The canal is at its best on a weekday morning or a summer evening, when the towpath is quiet and the light comes low across the water. Weekends bring Camden’s crowds to the lock. The trip boats run in rain, under their canopies, and are among the few London boat trips that suit any age: there is no speed, no spray and no minimum age. For livelier water, the Thames speedboats are 15 minutes away by Tube.

Regent's Canal Boat Trip FAQ
What to know before a boat trip on the Regent's Canal.
Yes: it is the calm, green side of London, and a boat is the best way to see it. Between Camden and Little Venice it passes London Zoo, the edge of Regent's Park, rows of houseboats and a working lock. The Camden canal boat ride covers that stretch in 90 minutes with commentary.
At Little Venice in Paddington in the west and Limehouse Basin on the Thames in the east. It opened in 1820 and runs 8.6 miles (13.8 km) with twelve locks. The trip boats use the western stretch between Little Venice and Camden; the east, through Islington and Hackney, is better on foot or by kayak.
About 45 minutes one way on the London Waterbus, and 90 minutes on the Jenny Wren trip from Camden. Times vary with canal traffic and the wait at the Maida Hill tunnel. The Camden canal boat ride also goes through Hampstead Road Lock.
US$31 a person for the 90-minute Camden canal boat on GetYourGuide, or £17 for a 45-minute London Waterbus ride bought direct (October 2026). A self-drive GoBoat is US$127 for a boat of up to eight, and a guided kayak US$20 a person.

Yes: GoBoat rents electric boats for up to eight people from Paddington Basin, and no boating experience is needed. Staff give a driving and safety lesson before you go, the boats travel at up to 4 mph, and life jackets are provided. It is US$127 per boat on GetYourGuide (October 2026); see the GoBoat listing.
Yes: it is one of the few London boat trips with no age limit, speed or spray. The London Waterbus lets under-4s ride free. The Camden canal boat has stairs to board, so lift buggies down the steps; the kayak tour is for adults only.
Yes: the trip boats have canopies and run in rain. GoBoat also sails rain or shine and cancels only for extreme weather such as very strong wind. The canal is sheltered, so trips are rarely called off.
